Vitiello: Milan could move on from ‘fragile’ Maignan – the two replacements in the frame

With Mike Maignan’s contract approaching its last few months, AC Milan have been forced to look around for possible replacements.

When Maignan is available, he is one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A if not world football. The problem is that he has so far missed over 40 games since arriving from Lille in the 2021 summer transfer window, due to a multitude of different injury issues.

The most recent cause for concern came on Sunday night. Maignan hobbled off with what appeared to be a calf problem and a long-term absence was instantly feared when he was seen leaving San Siro on crutches, suggesting a tear of the muscle.

However, it seems he has actually avoided any serious issue, which raises even more question marks, though it is also possible that he has learned the nature of his body by now and came off as a precaution.

A ‘very fragile goalkeeper’

Now, Antonio Vitiello has shed some light on the situation related to Maignan and his potential heir during his weekly column for MilanNews,.

“Mike Maignan suffered a calf injury during the win against Bologna. Tests ruled out any injuries, but he left San Siro on crutches, and it remains to be seen how long he will be out,” he said.

“We’re talking about a very strong but also very fragile goalkeeper, sidelined every year by injury. The issue of a renewal remains a hot topic. Allegri and Tare will try to convince him, but negotiations are currently stalled.

“If he doesn’t stay, two names are already being mentioned: Zion Suzuki, a 23-year-old from Parma, and Elia Caprile, currently at Cagliari. Torriani will then be given more confidence, but a loan deal to give him more experience would have been the right choice.”
