Watch: Milan denied free-kick before Pisa’s goal despite blatant foul on Gabbia

1 week ago 44

AC Milan were denied a free-kick by VAR after Pisa’s second goal last night, despite what was a pretty blatant foul on Matteo Gabbia.

After taking the lead through Rafael Leao, Milan conceded twice against Pisa to go behind, first through a penalty by Juan Cuadrado and then an out-of-nowhere goal by M’Bala Nzola. However, the away side’s second goal perhaps should have been disallowed.

Looking at the replays, it’s clear that Gabbia was on the receiving end of a pretty blatant foul, as the Pisa attacker ran straight into him and brought him to the ground. VAR did have a look afterwards, but it’s unclear if the foul was looked at or only the potential offside.

The most obvious foul on Matteo Gabbia, but it’s fine, we’ll just check the irrelevant offside instead. 👍@SERIEA, @FIGC, you are disgraceful.

In any case, whether the foul was looked at or not by VAR, it’s very strange that the referee wasn’t called to the monitor to have a look. Gabbia stood up pretty quickly afterwards, but perhaps he would have benefited from staying on the ground to really highlight the foul.

Massimiliano Allegri was actually asked about the foul in his post-match interview, but instead of pointing out the referee’s error, he simply said that Milan failed in other aspects in that sequence. In short, they shouldn’t have found themselves in that situation to begin with.
