Wayne Rooney admits Arsenal transfer 'doubt' and makes early U-turn

It would be fair to say Noni Madueke’s early-season form at Arsenal has taken many by surprise — Wayne Rooney included.

The winger arrived at the Emirates Stadium this summer in a surprise move from Chelsea. After an inconsistent spell with the Blues, doubts lingered over the merits of the signing, especially given Arsenal’s existing strength on the right flank.

But with Bukayo Saka sidelined, Madueke has stepped up impressively, troubling defenders with his direct runs inside from the wing.

The 22-year-old also impressed for England during the recent international break, scoring and starring in a 5-0 victory over Finland.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sport, the former Manchester United and England captain admitted Madueke has exceeded his expectations.

“I think he’s been fantastic,” Rooney said. “I still had my doubts about him, I’ll be honest, when he was at Chelsea. Then when Arsenal signed him, I wasn’t really too sure.

“Obviously, they have [Bukayo] Saka there as well. But I think he’s been fantastic. At the start of the season, how direct he’s been, and he played really well for England as well. It looks like really good business for Arsenal.”

Madueke was one of several big-money additions at Arsenal this summer, alongside Viktor Gyökeres, Eberechi Eze, Martín Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapié, Christian Nørgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

After such heavy investment, Arsenal are once again expected to challenge for the Premier League title, having finished second in each of the last three campaigns.

Sunday’s clash with Manchester City could prove pivotal in shaping the title race. Arteta has confirmed that Saka is close to returning from injury, but Madueke’s form means there is no pressure to rush him back.
