Wayne Rooney makes Virgil van Dijk claim after watching Man City beat Liverpool

2 hours ago 2

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk had a first-half goal ruled out after Andy Robertson was adjudged to have obstructed Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from an offside position.

The goal would have leveled proceedings at 1-1. Instead, City went on to nab another goal before halftime via a Van Dijk defected (scored by Nico Gonzalez) en route to a dominant 3-0 win.

Wayne Rooney was on hand with Amazon to provide analysis just days after Van Dijk spoke passively aggressively about the former England international during the midweek Champions League match against Real Madrid.

Despite their testy exchange, which started after Rooney called out Van Dijk's "body language, Rooney admitted the Dutch center back's goal against City should have counted.

“The Van Dijk goal should have stood," the former Manchester United forward said. "I don’t think Andy Robertson delayed Donnarumma's diving. The City keeper can see the ball the whole way, so I think that was the wrong decision."

When the Reds were mired in the middle of their October winless run, Rooney criticized both Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. "This is a time where the manager and the leaders in the team need to figure it out very quickly," he said. '

"Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah they've signed new deals, but I don't think they've really led that team this season. I think body language tells you a lot, and I think we're seeing slightly different body language from the two of them.

"They are the top two players in that team and if their body language is not right, that affects everyone else…"I might be wrong on this, but if I was a Liverpool fan or the manager, that would be a big concern for me."

Van Dijk and Rooney faced off in the Premier League a handful of times

Both Van Dijk and Salah signed new deals with Liverpool early this year: the Dutchman's pays him around £400,000 a week for two years.

He called out "noise" from the media during an awkward spot on the Amazon Prime UCL post-match pitchside show. "In that [Liverpool team] meeting the time was October, so much football to be played, so many twists and turns that can happen and I think at times the noise was a lot," Van Dijk said.

Host Gabby Logan stirred the pot. : "You looking at anybody round here in particular?" she asked. Van Dijk didn't take the bait. "No, no not all, but listen I think it is very important to put things in perspective, keep your head down and work and get out the situation because the quality we have, that is not the issue. It is about keep working and keep going," he said.

Rooney didn't speak for a while, but he eventually cut the tension with a joke. "I am not saying anything anymore because I think I spurred them on and put them on a winning streak!" he quipped.
