‘We always look only at ourselves’ – Gabbia remaining calm despite ‘two points dropped’

Matteo Gabbia has insisted that AC Milan are only focused on themselves, but admitted the two points dropped against Como stings.

Milan’s faint Scudetto hopes might have finally faded as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Como at San Siro on Wednesday night. Nico Paz profited from Mike Maignan’s stray pass to give the visitors the lead, but Rafael Leao lobbed Jean Butez from 25 yards to level it in the second half.

The result means that the Rossoneri are now seven points behind their city rivals Inter, having used up their game in hand. With just 12 games to go and 36 points on the table, it feels as though the title hopes are getting more and more remote.

At the end of the game, Gabbia spoke to TeleLombardia to offer his thoughts on a game that he played the second half of, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

Is it two points lost or one gained?

“When we don’t win a game, we have to think of it as two points dropped because we could have done better. Therefore, there’s no point in continuing to focus on this game: we need to analyse what we could have done better and return to winning on Sunday, which is the most important thing.”

There was a sense that this was a crossroads. What now?

“Honestly, we always look only at ourselves. These are the same things you’re talking about outside: we know we have to win every game we face.

“We’ll continue to look at ourselves and try to do our best to get to the end of the year without any regrets, giving 100% as we’re doing. We need to be calm, clear-headed, and confident.”

Is Maignan human again?

“Mike is a phenomenal goalkeeper, he’s our leader and our captain. I think everyone makes mistakes, and we shouldn’t focus on that. We could have recovered the game later, but we didn’t complete the comeback.

“But I’m absolutely calm about Mike, who is a champion. He’ll return to performing the miracles he’s accustomed us to, as always.”
