‘We want to stay close to Milan’ – Politano hints at who Napoli see as main title rivals

Matteo Politano has suggested that AC Milan are Napoli’s main rivals for the Scudetto rather than the current table-toppers Inter.

It was yet another weekend in Serie A where the table had multiple leaders at different points. While Juventus drew and Roma lost to create a bit of separation for the top three, Milan beat Cagliari, then Napoli won at Lazio and Inter got past Bologna, to leave the Nerazzurri top by one point.

Politano spoke to DAZN after Lazio-Napoli to give his thoughts on the game at the Stadio Olimpico, and he mentioned Milan as being the team that the current champions want to try and match. MilanNews relayed what he had to say.

“We wanted to start this new year well against a strong team, especially at home. In the first half we were good at dominating and scoring two goals,” he said.

“Can we do better than in 2025? This is our goal, but we know it won’t be easy. There are three competitions and we want to approach them in the best possible way. Now we want to stay close to Milan.”

Napoli pipped Inter to the title last season and many predicted it to be another two-horse race between them this time. However, both have already lost to Milan this season, and Napoli defeated the Nerazzurri at the Maradona earlier in the campaign. It promises to be a fascinating race.
