What time does January transfer window close? Man United impacted by deadline day change

The Premier League transfer window closes soon, with clubs running out of time to complete their January signings. Here's all you need to know about this year's deadline day

As the winter transfer window draws to a close, Premier League clubs are scrambling to finalise their last-minute deals. Whether they're aiming for league glory, European qualification or simply survival, there's plenty of incentive for investment this month.

Several high-profile transfers have already been completed, some even in the first half of January. Antoine Semenyo made an immediate impact after his move to Manchester City, netting on his debut, while young defender Jahmal Simpson-Pusey joined German side Koln on loan.

Neighbours Manchester United made a change in the dugout before adding any new players. Ruben Amorim didn't even make it until the halfway point in the month, with Michael Carrick now in interim charge until the summer.

This time last year, many clubs were racing against the clock to secure new signings. Aston Villa managed to loan Marcus Rashford from United just a day before the deadline, while City's acquisition of Nico Gonzalez went through on deadline day itself.

This time of year, fans are traditionally glued to their televisions or phones as they eagerly await news of that crucial late deal. Here's everything you need to know about this year's transfer deadline day, as United and City have longer to complete deals than in some previous windows.

When is transfer deadline day?

Traditionally, the January transfer window closes on January 31. However, this year is a bit different, with Premier League clubs given until Monday, February 2, to bring in new players.

There is one extra exception, too. Clubs can sign free agents outside the window if they have space in their 25-man squad, though this has become an increasingly rare occurrence for Premier League sides.

When are the deadlines for other leagues?

The transfer window also shuts on February 2 in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, among other leagues. Some clubs have a little more time to buy, though, meaning Premier League clubs can still sell players to those leagues for a little longer.

Portugal's window closes on February 3, while Greece, Turkey and Austria have three more days after that and a handful of other European leagues have even longer windows. Major League Soccer, the top tier, in the United States, runs on a different calendar to most European leagues and their window doesn't close until March 27.

What happened on deadline day last year?

Last year saw a busy end to the transfer window for Premier League clubs, though some of the biggest deals went through before deadline day itself. The biggest in financial terms was Jhon Duran's £71m move from Aston Villa to Al-Nassr on January 31, while City spent big on Omar Marmoush earlier on the window.

United's biggest deal saw them bring Patrick Dorgu to Old Trafford one day before the deadline. On deadline day itself, Nico Gonzalez's £50m transfer to City from Porto was the most significant in financial terms.

Which Premier League clubs might be active on deadline day?

Certain clubs have more incentive to be active than others. United may be hesitant to make substantial investments without a permanent manager at the helm, while Liverpool, having spent heavily over the summer, will need to decide whether to open their wallets again.

Things can change quickly for any club with injuries and forms often prompting panic buys. One thing is certain, however, it's unlikely to be a quiet day.
