Antoine Semenyo scored on his Manchester City debut as the Blues thrashed Exeter City 10-1 in the FA Cup third round
Manchester City bosses believe Antoine Semenyo will offer a missing piece of the Etihad jigsaw after a goalscoring debut.
Semenyo made his first start for City against Exeter in the FA Cup third round, just 24 hours after completing his move from Bournemouth. The 26-year-old marked the occasion with a goal and has potentially played his way into a start against Newcastle united in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday.
His £62.5million arrival increases the competition in wide areas with City currently without Savinho and Oscar Bobb due to injury. Semenyo started on the left against Exeter but can play on both sides and through the middle.
And City assistant Pep Lijnders, deputising for Pep Guardiola in his post match media duties with the Etihad chief serving a one-man touchline ban following three yellow cards, is excited about what Semenyo can offer.
"I think a lot of good performances today, a lot of good individual performances. I think when the team plays like that it becomes easier for the individual, but Antoine is settling well," Lijnders said.
"He is a humble guy, we have followed him for a long time, but he brings something to the front line, what we really want and what we need. He can attack quick, he wants to chase, he is a guy who doesn't stop. I think you see today that he can adapt quite quickly to our style. It's nice to have him with us."
The Blues were ruthless in their approach to the cup tie, fielding a strong side and romping into a four-goal lead by the break before running out convincing winners. It left Lijnders pleased with the professional showing.
He said: "I think we know Exeter quite well, of course we had only two days to prepare, but their team, how we saw it, how we analysed them, when they can play, when they have space to play, they build really good [in] the game.
"I think from the first minute we showed with our high press, with the way we went after them, we really respected that, because the way the performance was on top to get the ball back quick, it was a good performance.
"I think for the fans, for everybody around, the amount of goals, but especially when it was 4-0, 5-0 we kept pushing, and it was overall a really good day for Man City."
