Why Jesus and Tel can be added to Champions League squads

Gabriel Jesus has replaced Max Dowman in Arsenal's Champions League squad after the 15-year-old picked up an injury playing for the club's under-21s on Saturday.

Jesus, who sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January, is yet to feature for Mikel Arteta's side this season, but has appeared on the bench twice.

It means the Brazilian is now available for their game with Club Brugge on Wednesday night.

Dowman will not be permitted to play in any Uefa competitions for 60 days - meaning he will be unvailable for January's league phase matches against Inter Milan and Kairat Almaty in January.

Dowman has had a breakout season for the Gunners, and became the youngest player in Champions League history after coming on in November's 3-0 win over Slavia Prague.

Jesus, who also played in the friendly on Saturday, was initially left out of Arsenal's Champions League squad.

Tottenham also added forward Mathys Tel in place of injured striker Dominic Solanke, meaning he is available to face Slavia Prague on Tuesday.

The Frenchman was left out of Thomas Frank's initial European squad, as Spurs were over the limit of the 22 players that they could register.

Tottenham are not able to choose from a full compliment of 25 senior players in the competition after they did not register eight homegrown players in their 'List A squad' by the time of the cut-off on 2 September.

As Brandon Austin, Djed Spence, Ben Davies, Archie Gray, Brennan Johnson are the five 'locally trained' players registered by Uefa, the club was punished by losing three 'List A' places.

Clubs are able to make one change to their Champions League 'List A' before matchday six of the league phase.

If an outfield player is ruled out for an extended period of time with a long-term injury or illness, the club is able to select a replacement.

Uefa brought in the law this season to safeguard players from "additional workload pressure".

Liverpool were able to add Federico Chiesa in September after summer signing Giovanni Leoni sustained an ACL injury. Chelsea also made use of the new rule before the league phase began by replacing the injured Dario Essugo with new signing Facundo Buonanotte.

Manchester City and Newcastle United are yet to make any alterations to their squads.

Dowman was initially named in Arsenal's Champions League 'List A' to enable him to play in the competition, with players under 16 prevented from playing in the competition.

Dowman will be eligible for Arsenal's 'List B' when he turns 16 on 31 December, meaning he will be eligible to play after the league phase, but not take up a crucial spot in the 25-man 'List A' squad.
