Why Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher saw Champions League request denied by Man City

2 hours ago 21

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was turned away from the away end at the Etihad Stadium during the midweek clash between Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.

Carragher had been at Anfield the previous night, watching his former club secure a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League. Just 24 hours later, Carragher was in Manchester to cover City's match against Dortmund in the fourth league phase of the Champions League for CBS Sports.

The 47-year-old was seen walking towards the Etihad with Dortmund fans ahead of Wednesday night's kick-off. And this isn't the first time Carragher has mingled with fans of the Bundesliga club during a Champions League tie.

The ex-Liverpool defender was spotted at Signal Iduna Park's renowned 'Yellow Wall' for Dortmund's semi-final match against Paris Saint-Germain back in 2024, where he celebrated alongside the German club's supporters.

However, the Daily Mail reports that Carragher tried to join Dortmund fans in the away end at the Etihad on Wednesday evening but was denied entry by both UEFA and City for several reasons.

Neither City nor UEFA chose to comment, but the report suggests UEFA felt Carragher's press credentials were not sufficient to allow him into the away end.

City were also reportedly wary about letting a former Liverpool player into the away end to support the visiting side.

Pep Guardiola's side secured a commanding 4-1 victory with goals from Phil Foden (two), Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki, ahead of a crucial Premier League encounter against title contenders Liverpool on Sunday.

Carragher was subsequently spotted pitchside with fellow CBS Sports pundit Peter Schmeichel, discussing his journey to the Etihad with Dortmund's travelling supporters.

"It's been fantastic, we had a great walk in from Manchester city centre to the ground," Carragher told CBS Sports before kick-off on Wednesday night.

"They're enjoying themselves, they're looking forward to the game and they're a little bit worried about Erling Haaland.

"But they've got their own man up front in (Serhou) Guirassy, who we think might be able to cause a problem or two.

"They're in full flight, and hopefully by the end of the game they're going to really enjoy themselves, and I might join them."

Liverpool won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium back in February en route to winning the Premier League title. It could be 10 points behind Arsenal by the time it kicks off in Manchester this time around.
