Chelsea confirmed Liam Rosenior's departure from his role as the club's manager on Wednesday less than 24 hours after the defeat to Brighton

Chelsea issued a statement confirming that they had parted company with Liam Rosenior on Wednesday evening. The decision was made following the Blues’ 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Tuesday night, a result which leaves them an uphill task in the race for Champions League qualification.

Rosenior leaves Chelsea after just three months in charge, and on the back of a run of five defeats in the Premier League, all of which were without scoring.

The Blues are now in seventh place in the Premier League table and have just four matches left to play this season, as well as an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley Stadium this weekend.

Calum McFarlane has been placed in interim charge by Chelsea and will be in the role until the end of the season, at which time the Blues will look to name a permanent replacement for Rosenior.

Chelsea confirmed the news of Rosenior’s departure on Wednesday with a lengthy statement on the club’s official website.

"Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior,” the statement from Chelsea read.

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.

"Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment mid-way through the season.

"This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.

"Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing Club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.

"As the Club works to bring stability to the Head Coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment."

A host of potential candidates have already been linked with the job on a permanent basis, but football.london understands that Chelsea are not currently in active talks with any potential candidates for the job.

Instead, Chelsea will take their time to search for the club’s new head coach, with the BlueCo ownership group looking for a candidate who aligns with the club's long-term goals and can help develop the young players in the squad.
