Cristian Romero has a unique release clause in Tottenham contract: Three clubs can activate it

Cristian Romero reportedly has a unique release clause in the new contract that he signed with Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

Romero’s long-term future at Tottenham is in doubt ahead of the summer, with clubs around Europe circling over the Spurs captain.

Sources suggest that the 27-year-old could leave Tottenham this summer even if the club avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Spurs are thought to be keen to hang onto the World Cup winner, but it has emerged that a clause in the defender’s contract may make it very difficult to do so.

Cristian Romero’s Tottenham release clause can be activated by three clubs

It has now been revealed by Marca that when Romero penned a new contract with Tottenham last summer, he insisted on adding a clause that would make it easy for him to move to Atletico Madrid a year down the line.

While the La Liga side could not meet the North London club’s asking price last summer, a clause in the centre-back’s new contract allows Atletico to sign him for just €60m (£51.8m) at the end of this season.

The report claims that Romero’s desire to move to Spain means that the clause has also been extended to Real Madrid. In fact, Marca state it includes ‘Atlético Madrid and the two giants of La Liga’, which would imply Barcelona as well.

That means that the three La Liga giants can sign the Tottenham man for the fee mentioned above, but the report seems to suggest that the clause is not valid for any other club.

What Atletico Madrid are thinking about Romero ahead of the summer

Marca revealed that the Argentine defender was the Colchoneros’ top target during last summer’s transfer window, and the club have since not given up hope of landing the player.

In fact, it is asserted that Atletico once again plan to prioritise a deal for Romero when the transfer window opens this summer.

Ahead of Tottenham’s clash against Atletico last week, Simeone publicly expressed his admiration for Romero’s qualities on and off the pitch.
