Manchester United is considering reappointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager on an interim basis – just over four years on from his sacking by the Old Trafford club

Two former Liverpool players can't understand why Manchester United is considering bringing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in as an interim replacement for Ruben Amorim.
United sacked Amorim on Monday fewer than 24 hours on from the Portuguese's fiery post-game press conference at Elland Road, when he hinted at interference in on-field matters from the higher-ups at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils intend to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season, before installing a permanent replacement for Amorim in the summer.
Darren Fletcher took charge of United's game against Burnley on Wednesday, but United has held talks with Solskjaer and Michael Carrick over filling the position on a longer-term basis, while Ruud van Nistelrooy is also said to be a contender.

Solskjaer came in on an interim basis following Jose Mourinho's sacking in December 2018, and a fantastic run of results earned the Norwegian the job on a permanent basis before his sacking in November 2021.
Carrick took charge of the team for three games following Solskjaer's exit before the disastrous appointment of Ralf Rangnick, while Van Nistelrooy was at the helm for four games following Erik ten Hag's sacking in 2024.
In his two full seasons in charge, Solskjaer secured second and third-place finishes in the Premier League, but former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy questioned why United would go back to Solskjaer after the club ultimately deemed that he had failed the first time around.
"The Solskjaer one coming back is crazy," Murphy said. "United paid him to leave because he ultimately failed, and then they're going to pay him to come back. It seems ridiculous when you've got options like Michael Carrick.

"Fletch obviously is a decent coach, and then you've got someone like [Roy] Keane who the fans would love to come back. Some people might think that might be chaotic, but he's a leader.
"They need somebody to galvanize everybody. I'm not sure Solskjaer is the man to do that. It's a big transition now for Man United again."
Another former Red, Stephen Warnock, agreed. He said: "They felt that Amorim leaving the club was the right decision. Now they know that there are options that will be available after the World Cup.
"And there's going to be a decision on a handful of managers, whp's going to be there? Tuchel? Ancelotti? Pochettino? There's going to be a lot of availability.
"I understand that waiting [until the end of the season to appoint a permanent manager], but I don't understand the Solskjaer one. I don't understand why you'd go back in for him."
