Jay Spearing revealed he stole the match ball after scoring for Liverpool legends against Dortmund

Jay Spearing revealed he was so delighted with his goal in Liverpool legends’ draw against Dortmund on Saturday that he took home the match ball after the game.

The team of ex-Reds drew 2-2 at Anfield in a match organized to raise funds for the LFC Foundation. Liverpool squandered a two-goal lead at the interval, which had been established by excellent finishes from Thiago and Spearing. The latter, who never scored a single goal for the club in 55 senior appearances, netted an excellent strike from the edge of the box in the closing stages of the first half.

The midfielder is still employed by Liverpool in a playing/coaching capacity with the Under-21s, but admitted even he was surprised when the ball flew beyond Dortmund stopper Roman Weidenfeller at the Anfield Road End.

“I don’t score many goals and I didn’t know what to do, genuinely,” the 37-year-old told the media after the match.

“It came at me earlier and the crowd shouted to shoot and I thought: ‘Na, that’s not my game.’ Then when that fell to the edge of the box, I had a go.

“I caught it sweet; it sounded nice and thankfully it went into the top bin. It’s a moment I’m going to cherish, as you can see because I robbed the ball.”

Spearing started as part of a midfield three along with Steven Gerrard and Thiago at Anfield. While his partners may have enjoyed more storied careers, Spearing’s continued work with the Under-21s on a day-to-day basis did hand him one major advantage.

“I've been keeping a little bit fitter, but the lads are telling me that I've got to run the most, which makes it a bit more pressure to run around, and everyone's shouting at me to go and press when I'm a bit like: ‘Hold on, give me a sec to breathe,’” said Spearing.

“I'm in a very fortunate position,” he added. “I am a local lad, I love the club, I'm a Liverpool fan.

“To go and play a legends’ game at Anfield in front of over 60,000, alongside Stevie G, who I played with, but also with Thiago, he's an absolute master of football, isn't he?

“It was unbelievable, a bit of a pinch-me moment, but I loved every single minute of it.”

Steven Gerrard sees his shot saved

Gerrard tried in vain to score for Liverpool back at Anfield

The build-up to Saturday’s legends’ game was dominated by the return of Jurgen Klopp to Anfield, with the German back on Merseyside for just the second time since his departure as head coach in 2024.

Spearing worked alongside Klopp before his Liverpool exit, and said the opportunity to play under him, at least once, was an honor.

“He's been incredible. I think since he's come back, I was very fortunate enough for the first 18 months to work alongside him and see what he does on a day-to-day basis.

“But to have him back, the enthusiasm, the love he has for this club, the love we have for the fans. He gave us that boost. We had a chat before we went out in the game, and it was incredible.

“It was silent; you couldn’t hear a pin drop because everyone was zoned in, listening to him. And he made you feel a million dollars. We went up there and the lads really performed, and he's fantastic to have around.”
