Liverpool decision has definitely paid off as 'Marcus Rashford is absolutely correct'

Rene Meulensteen, who was an assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, has agreed with Marcus Rashford about the difficult times at Old Trafford — with Liverpool cited as a contrasting example.

"This is what people forget," Rashford said on The Rest Is Football podcast earlier this month. "We have been way below where we deem United to be, but if you take a step back, which I've been able to do, especially over these last six months, what do you expect?

"People say that we've been in a transition for years, but to be in a transition, you have to start it. The actual transition hasn't started yet.

"When Liverpool went through this, they got [Jurgen] Klopp and stuck with him. They didn't win in the beginning. People only remember his final few years when he was competing with City and winning the biggest trophies.

"To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. I feel like we’ve had that many different managers and different ideas and different strategies in order to win ... you end up in no man’s land."

"Marcus Rashford is absolutely correct," Meulensteen told Coin Poker. "Looking at how Liverpool have been exceptional in their recruitment, particularly in securing their next manager.

Arne Slot and Ruben Amorim.

Arne Slot and Ruben Amorim.

"They even spoke with Ruben Amorim, but decided against him because his preferred system didn't align with theirs. Liverpool prioritized a style based on energy and intensity, building upon what Jurgen Klopp established.

"Arne Slot is a fantastic fit, and I've believed that from the start. I had no doubt he'd hit the ground running; I know him personally from Holland, and he possesses a great football vision and is very intelligent in his approach.

"Even now, look at how thorough they are in the transfer market. They won the league last year, but they're disappointed with their exits from other competitions, including the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.

"They want more, and to re-establish themselves as Premier League contenders this season, Slot has clearly stated his needs. Credit to the Liverpool owners, they have backed him and continue to do so."

Liverpool could further strengthen this summer with a move for Alexander Isak potentially still on the agenda.

"It will be interesting to see if the Isak deal goes through, as that would significantly strengthen the team," Meulensteen added.

"Everything Liverpool has done right since Klopp's departure, United have done wrong. The evidence is clear, and many others involved have moved on.

"But up until now, they haven't got it right. In my opinion, the root of the problems lies with the ownership at the top, and I don't believe those issues have been fixed; they are still lingering in the background."

Liverpool.com says: Slot was the perfect choice for Liverpool. The Reds kept most things the same last season and won the league; this time around, lots has changed and the results will be fascinating.
