Liverpool transfer news as RB Leipzig 'agrees personal terms' and Alexander Isak slammed

1 day ago 34

Liverpool has around 11 days left until the summer transfer window slams shut. On September 1, at 7 p.m. UK time (2 p.m. ET), clubs will no longer be allowed to make signings (well, until January, at least).

But what else does Arne Slot need? Another number nine is on the agenda, of course, while there is an argument for adding another forward option on top of that too. Then there is the potential for a move for Marc Guehi to get over the line though he is expected to play on Thursday as Crystal Palace plays Fredrikstad in the UEFA Conference League.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today. No prizes for guessing the name of the first player that we're discussing...

Alexander Isak (Newcastle United)

It wouldn't be a Liverpool transfer round-up without Alexander Isak featuring at the moment. In the last day or so, the Swede has broken his silence and then Newcastle issued a statement in rebuttal.

What does that mean for the state of play? For now, not much has changed, though Newcastle has since seen another bid rejected for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa.

Even if he can push through a move to St James' Park, it seems unlikely that Newcastle would then be open to entertaining bids for Isak. It doesn't want to lose the player and seems to be even more determined to dig its heels in now.

"The right way to do it is, you put in a transfer request or you have a chat with the manager and say, look, I want to play my football somewhere else, whatever, and the manager will then sit down and have a chat with you," Ally McCoist said on talkSPORT.

"The way he went about it, you could clearly say he had a problem with Newcastle or a problem with somebody at Newcastle. My argument is he still shouldn't and can't do what he did."

Isak has made his stance publicly clear, though, and while Newcastle hasn't taken to it well, it will be fascinating to see what happens next. Monday's game between the Magpies and Liverpool could be tasty.

Liverpool.com says: Isak could put in a transfer request, but what would that actually do? If Newcastle is putting its foot down and refusing to sell, it won't change anything. Something has to happen soon, though, with the clock ticking.

Harvey Elliott (linked with RB Leipzig)

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott is the top target for German side RB Leipzig to replace Xavi Simons this summer, according to Sky Germany. The player is said to have already agreed personal terms with the Bundesliga outfit.

Simons is expected to move to the Premier League to sign for Chelsea. A fee would still need to be agreed between Liverpool and Leipzig for Elliott's services, but he looks like he could be the chosen one for the Red Bull club.

Elliott barely played for Arne Slot last season and didn't come on against Bournemouth when Liverpool was in need of a goal late on. Federico Chiesa was turned to off the bench instead.

But losing him at this point in the summer, when the attacking numbers that Liverpool can call upon have already dwindled, would feel like a bit of a risk. Not replacing Elliott would leave a hole, even though his minutes in the 2024/25 campaign were very limited.

Liverpool.com says: Elliott is a very talented player and moving to Germany would probably do him good. In the Bundesliga, there is more space to operate in and he should be able to show his best skills.

Staying in the Premier League would have been a good option as well but lots of young talents have moved abroad lately and excelled. Elliott should back himself to do the same if the move materializes.
