Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has outlined why the club decided to bring in Lewis Koumas on loan from Liverpool, with the Blues head coach reeling off a list of assets the new arrival will add to his side.

The Wales international’s move to St Andrews was confirmed on Friday, but he was not registered in time to play in Saturday’s home match against Oxford United. Blues won that 1-0 to continue their unbeaten start to the season and currently sit fifth in the table after three matches.

There is certainly no shortage of excitement around the club at present following last season’s promotion and the positive steps made under the new Tom Brady-led ownership. Koumas ’ arrival, one of 10 incomings this summer, underlines that, with the Liverpool youngster opting to join Birmingham despite plenty of interest across the Championship.

The club is also delighted by the loan signing, with the Blues making a big splash across their various platforms after the deal was announced.

Speaking following the win over Oxford, Davies explained just what he thinks Koumas will bring to the team.

“Lewis is obviously coming from a great club, a great education development he's had there,” Davies told Birmingham Live.

Lewis Koumas

Lewis Koumas has joined Birmingham City on loan for the 2025/26 season

“He's had a loan now, obviously his first loan at Stoke, he’s coped well with the Championship last season, played a lot of games.

“He's a winger, can play across the front, left, right and can play in the middle as well. He’s direct, technically good, he's got a sense of goal and I love the intensity he plays with, he's not a lad that sort of waits and things to happen.

“He tries to make things happen, so he'll make runs, he'll press and give you a lot of that work without the ball as well.

“So I'm really pleased to have him with us now because I think there was a lot of competition to try and attract him.

“He's obviously been involved in pre-season at Liverpool, but I'm really pleased that he chose to join us.”

Koumas impressed last season on loan at Stoke City, where he made 49 appearances. The 19-year-old has played just once for Liverpool, scoring on his debut in a 3-0 FA Cup win over Southampton in February 2024.

Highly regarded at his parent club, Koumas played two pre-season matches over the summer but was omitted from Liverpool’s tour of Asia.
