Man City owners could make unexpected Mohamed Salah move after Liverpool bombshell

As Mohamed Salah weighs up his next move ahead of the summer, could the Liverpool legend end up joining Manchester City’s stable?

Salah will be leaving Anfield at the end of this season, drawing his nine-year association with the Reds to a close, during which time his legacy has been secured as he has become the club’s third-highest goalscorer of all time, while winning two Premier League titles, Champions League and plenty of other trophies.

Announcing his impending exit in a shock video message to supporters on Tuesday, Salah said: "I want to thank everyone who was part of this club during my time here, especially my teammates, past and present.

"And to the fans, I don't have enough words. The support you showed me, through the best time of my career, is something I will never forget and something I will always take with me.

"Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home, to me and my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone."

While Liverpool will be left looking for a suitable replacement for its main goal-getter over the past nine years, Salah shouldn’t be short of offers for a new club.

His agent isn’t giving anything away at this stage, having sent a typically spiky message shortly after his client made his announcement, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation over where he could end up next.

Saudi Arabia would appear to be the most likely option, with Salah having been linked with a move to the Middle East for the past few years now, while the MLS could also be an option, with City’s owners potentially interested in taking on Salah.

The Athletic has named New York City, which is owned by the City Football Group, as a club to “keep an eye on”, with a source telling the outlet that the club wouldn’t rule out trying to sign Salah.

It’s suggested that, with New York City opening a new stadium in the Queens district next year, Salah would help to bring the type of star power that could help draw in fans - potentially in the same way that Lionel Messi has helped at Inter Miami.

And Salah has already been given an open invitation to make the move to the United States, with MLS commissioner Don Garber having addressed the possibility of the Egyptian joining the league back in December.

"Obviously, if [Salah] ever decides to come to Major League Soccer, we’d welcome him with open arms," Garber said.
