Marc Guehi to Liverpool latest as Man City joins transfer race

1 day ago 7

Liverpool's interest in Marc Guehi is intensifying as Arne Slot looks to strengthen his defence before the summer transfer window closes.

The Reds have a limited time to secure a deal for the defender, who has entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park. If Liverpool fails to strike a deal with Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish by September 1, it can resume negotiations in the new year.

However, from January, overseas clubs will be able to discuss a free transfer with Guehi for the summer of 2026. Should the England international not sign an extension, Palace will face a difficult decision.

The Eagles must determine whether they're willing to risk losing Guehi for nothing or decide to sell and recoup some money. Guehi will want assurances about his playing time, especially with Thomas Tuchel selecting his squad for this summer's World Cup.

With that in mind, we've compiled everything you need to know about Guehi and a potential move to Liverpool.

Liverpool keen to sign Guehi

We understand that Liverpool is interested in signing Guehi. The Reds initiated talks with Crystal Palace about a possible deal for the center-back following the Community Shield earlier this month.

Parish has made his position crystal clear that he would prefer to cash in on Guehi rather than watch him depart as a free agent when his contract runs out in June 2026. It's believed that the Chelsea academy product is eager for a switch to Anfield, but there remains a significant gap in valuations.

The south London team is understood to be demanding considerably more than what Liverpool is willing to stump up for a player who has entered the final 12 months of his deal. The Reds' chase could well extend until the final moments.

Man City joins the race

According to the Daily Star, Guehi has surfaced as a potential acquisition for Manchester City. The report suggests that Pep Guardiola's team could launch a bid for the Palace skipper should it lose Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake before next week's deadline.

It's reported that Galatasaray are pursuing the former, whilst Everton have targeted the latter. The Daily Star believes that Tottenham and Barcelona are also interested in Guehi.

Glasner worried by Palace situation

Speaking to BBC Sport before Palace's encounter against Nottingham Forest at the weekend, team boss Oliver Glasner confessed his concerns that the club might struggle to replace departed players.

"I am worried about Crystal Palace if we are losing players and we don't get the right ones in," declared the Eagles manager. "It is my duty as manager to tell the owners what we have to do to be competitive and stay on our pathway."

Glasner wants Guehi to stay, with the team hoping to be successful in Europe this season.

"We are very, very late to find replacements," said Glasner. "I think we could have behaved much better than we did. It's not the best way to start the season. I think we are below the edge.

'If Marc [Guehi] leaves maybe I will try my boots because I was a centre back. We have to act. It's Crystal Palace's future and we need to add numbers."
