Newcastle may have seen a host of forwards reject it this summer, but the Magpies did welcome one new player this week in Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa.
Ramsey has signed a five-year deal at Newcastle after Villa accepted an initial $52 million offer for Ramsey, and that fee could rise to $58 million with add-ons. Ramsey trained at Newcastle's Darsley Park training ground for the first time on Wednesday, ahead of a possible debut against Liverpool next Monday.
While Ramsey is an exciting addition for Newcastle, the North East club remains in a tricky spot regarding its forward options, with Alexander Isak still clearly keen to leave the club before the closure of the transfer window.
Newcastle lined up with wide man Anthony Gordon as a striker in Saturday's Premier League opener against Aston Villa, with Isak currently refusing to return to the fold.
Newcastle also lost striker Callum Wilson earlier in the summer as he departed at the end of his contract, and the club has so far failed to bring in a new striker.
It is continuing to work on a deal to sign Yoane Wissa, but it failed with its pursuits of Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, who favored moves to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.
Isak and Newcastle exchanged statements on the Sweden international's situation on Wednesday — Isak went first, explaining his absence from the PFA awards night in Manchester as he accused Newcastle of "breaking promises" by standing in his way of an exit from the club.
The North East outfit then hit back with a statement of its own, claiming the conditions of a summer sale have not been met.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer weighed in on the situation on Wednesday, blaming the player's agent and calling for Isak to dismiss him with immediate effect.
"I mean, oh my , what a f------ mess his agent has made of this, honestly," Shearer told Betfair.
"If I was him, I’d get his agent in a room and sack him on the spot immediately, because he is meant to be giving him the advice to sign that six‑year deal and there’s no get‑out clause.
"I mean, it’s ridiculous. And to take anyone’s word in football… it’s nonsensical to say that someone said, 'Oh, I’ll be able to get out at the end of the season.' Really? I mean, come on."
