Real Madrid willing to ditch 6 players as Trent Alexander-Arnold gets update

Trent Alexander-Arnold's Real Madrid prospects could improve considerably this summer, with reports suggesting the club is set to move on one of his primary competitors for a place in the starting line-up.

The defender made the switch from Liverpool to Real Madrid last summer after winding down his contract at Anfield. The 27-year-old's adaptation to Real Madrid hasn't been entirely smooth. Two separate injury setbacks have limited his appearances, and he's been in and out of the first team.

His performances when selected have also drawn some criticism, particularly regarding his defensive work, which has come under the most intense examination.

Nevertheless, his situation could improve this summer, with BILD claiming that Real is preparing a substantial squad restructuring during the summer transfer window.

The reshuffle could see up to six players leave the club.

Among those potentially departing is veteran right-back Dani Carvajal.

The 34-year-old represents Alexander-Arnold's chief rival for the position, with the Spanish international getting the nod ahead of him for the weekend's La Liga game against Elche.

Carvajal's potential departure could open the door for Alexander-Arnold to cement his place as Real Madrid's first-choice right-back at the Bernabeu.

Consistent game time might enable him to rediscover the form he displayed at Liverpool, which prompted the transfer initially.

Other players understood to be on Real Madrid's potential departure list include center-backs David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger, left-backs Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia, alongside midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.

Real Madrid and Alexander-Arnold resume their campaign on Tuesday when they travel to the Etihad Stadium for the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie against Manchester City.

The Spanish team holds a commanding 3-0 advantage from the opening leg, thanks to Federico Valverde's first-half hat-trick.

Alexander-Arnold featured in the starting XI for the first leg before making way for Carvajal with six minutes of regulation time left.

Liverpool also has a Champions League game this week, hosting Galatasaray on Wednesday. Galatasaray boasts 1-0 aggregate lead heading into that second-leg contest.
