Tottenham vs Newcastle Premier League preview, team news and predicted lineups

2 hours ago 31

Tottenham Hotspur will hope to win their first Premier League game of 2026 when they host Newcastle United in north London on Tuesday night.

It is now just two wins in Tottenham Hotspur’s previous 16 league games, following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat away to Manchester United, as the relegation zone continues to creep uncomfortably closer.

Despite the miserable run of form, that defeat in particular is difficult to pin on Thomas Frank, unlike several other losses this season, as Cristian Romero’s early red card left Spurs playing the vast majority of the contest with ten men.

Newcastle United arrive in similarly underwhelming shape. Eddie Howe’s side sit 12th in the Premier League table, just 4 points above Tottenham, and are winless in their last 5 league matches.

Their week went from bad to worse after elimination in the Carabao Cup semi-finals at the hands of Manchester City, before a last-minute 3-2 home defeat to Brentford at the weekend, a result that handed the Bees their first win at St James’ Park since 1934.

Tottenham vs Newcastle: head-to-head record

The reverse fixture played in December ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw. Cristian Romero scored both Tottenham goals, including a spectacular last-minute overhead kick, in a game many Spurs supporters still remember for a controversial penalty given against their favour.

The two sides also met in the Carabao Cup this campaign, with Newcastle emerging as comfortable 2-0 winners on their way to the semi-finals.

Tottenham’s last victory over Newcastle came back in December 2023, when Ange Postecoglou’s side ran out 4-1 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. That remains Spurs’ only win in the last eight meetings between the two clubs in all competitions.

Tottenham team news

Cristian Romero’s red card against Manchester United, his second dismissal of the season, means he will miss this fixture and the next three matches through suspension.

That defeat also brought another injury concern, with Destiny Udogie forced off just ten minutes into the second half. While the severity of the issue has not yet been confirmed, we expect him to sit this one out.

With Pedro Porro and Djed Spence also sidelined, Tottenham are left with just one fit recognised full-back in Souza, who made an unplanned debut at Old Trafford and looked decent.

Other absentees include Kevin Danso, Ben Davies, James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall, Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur, Richarlison and Mohammed Kudus.

Newcastle United team news

Newcastle will be without Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth, Valentino Livramento, Joelinton, Lewis Miley and Anthony Gordon for the trip to north London.

Predicted line-ups

TOTTENHAM: Vicario; Gray, Dragusin, Van de Ven, Souza; Gallagher, Palhinha, Sarr; Odobert, Solanke, Simons

NEWCASTLE: Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Ramsey; Elanga, Woltemade, Barnes

Our prediction

Now down in 15th place, with more draws and defeats than wins, the fixtures are not getting any kinder for Tottenham. If they are going to pull themselves clear of danger, this is a must-win.

Keep an eye on Xavi Simons. The Dutchman has been increasingly comfortable on the ball in recent weeks, adapting well to the physical demands of the Premier League, and he could cause real problems for a Newcastle midfield that may struggle to live with his close control and dribbling.

For the visitors, much of the threat will revolve around Bruno Guimaraes, who has been Newcastle’s most consistent performer during a difficult spell. That is also why we have gone with Yves Bissouma over Pape Sarr in midfield. A defensive trio as physical as Gallagher, Palhinha and Bissouma should be enough to neutralise the likes of Sando Tonali and Guimaraes.

Predicted score: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Newcastle United
