Robbie Fowler believes Liverpool’s transfer business next summer will be even more important than last year’s, as the Reds look to challenge for the Premier League title once again.
After claiming the crown with such ease in Arne Slot’s first campaign, and having forked out around £450M (over $600M) on new recruits last summer, the expectation pre-season was that Liverpool was the favorite to win the league again.
However, a hugely disappointing season sees the Reds sitting 21 points behind leaders Arsenal with seven games remaining. Despite the record spend, Liverpool’s lopsided squad has been exposed, and there’s a general feeling that major work is needed in the upcoming transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Liverpool.com at a Haier event at Anfield, Fowler said the club’s recent transfer business should help the Reds this year, especially when it comes to replacing Salah.
“I think the work that the club have done in terms of bringing in the players, I think that was maybe with Mo [in mind],” the 50-year-old opined.
“I think when you are building football clubs, when you are trying to get a settled team, you're building for the future. I think that's what the club did in terms of signing [Hugo] Ekitike and obviously Alexander Isak.

“I'd be amazed if something else doesn't happen in the summer because I think in order for the club to grow and progress, I think it's important that you bring players in.
“You hear about all these transitional periods all the time. But for me, I think every season is a transitional period for the football club and not too many people mention that. Every time a new player comes in, that's a transitional period.
“So next year's transitional period will probably be the most important because obviously Mo is going. There are obviously a few players coming towards the end of their contract, so what we're getting now, this conversation, you're probably going to get it at the end of next season as well.”
Excluding Ekitike, Liverpool’s summer signings endured slow starts to the campaign, but the likes of Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez have impressed in recent months.
While that has contributed to this season’s struggles, Fowler believes Liverpool will benefit from that next term. “You think of certainly the likes of Kerkez coming in, and Alexander Isak, both have obviously played in the Premier League, so know what it's like.
“Florian Wirtz coming is maybe a little bit different. We’ve seen glimpses of his quality and the brilliance he's got, but he's new to the Premier League. I know people will say the season's nearly done now, but the Premier League's different to any other league. Florian Wirtz will tell you that himself.
“Alexander Isak, obviously, he missed a large portion, but he was a standout player last year and obviously Kerkez was in the team for the year, so you've got players there who are capable of playing and performing and doing great things in the Premier League, so that aids the next season.”
